Hiya, folks!  I promised this a few weeks back, but finally have the brain real estate freed up to actually get to it.

Let's have an LJ party!  Come on in here and tell me about the things you're burning to talk about, and I will be your conversation partner!

Obsessed with tiny fandoms (or large fandoms, for that matter)?  Heart breaking over overlooked ships?  Want to raise a shout for interstitial feminism?  Or find somebody to coo with over adorable animals?  What's got your engine revving lately? From threatened bees to fascination with BDSM, lay it on me and I promise I'll read and reply.

And hopefully when you've commented, you'll take a look through the comments and find someone else you can have a chat with!

Shall I be predictable and say "GRIMM!!!!!!" ...? :D Yeah, okay, new fandom flush and everything, but it's been over three weeks now and going strong even though I'm all alone with it. Run while you can! *g*

Though really, I'm just realising more and more how incredibly lucky we were with Coldfire, all of us active at the same time and mostly interested in the same things. We had such a wonderful time there - and I've been in about a million teeny-tiny (or non-existent) fandoms, but I've never had anything like that anywhere else. I miss that, a lot. *sighs*

GRIMM!! I actually went and tried to find the backlog somewhere last week so that I could catch up and watch it with you, but I haven't been able to find it anywhere legal!

I really am shocked that Grimm is such a small fandom. It seems to have so much potential. From what you've said, it sounds like they've made a few terrible decisions in terms of cutting out world-building and character-building moments, but maybe it's one of those things where it takes a bit to really find itself and get the momentum going.

Man, it's so hard being in small fandoms. They're mostly what I've been in my whole life, and you just want somebody to share your excitement with... What we did with Coldfire really was amazing. :) But hey, we've got the core team back together, so who knows?

I think especially in the first season, they were trying a bit too hard to remain accessible, and the worldbuilding suffered just a bit for it. But they got better at it every year.

I don't understand the lack of an active fandom, either - it's a really fun show with so much fannish potential! Why more people haven't jumped on it is completely baffling. (Maybe they were all put off by the bad German? It was at its worst in the beginning, too.)

But then, I'm almost always out of step with the fannish mainstream - I hardly ever understand why people jump on this or that. Okay, so Winter Soldier is my current exemption (for once, the fandom appears to see the same appeal in it that I do), but usually even when I'm into a big fandom I'm not in it for the same reasons. For example, I adore Sherlock to pieces - but everyone else only seems to want to complain about how horrible the show is, particularly the things I like best. *headdesk*

Man, it's so hard being in small fandoms. They're mostly what I've been in my whole life, and you just want somebody to share your excitement with...

YES! It's really hard, sitting there basically bubbling over with excitement and having everyone else just shrug and move on. BUT I WANT TO TALK ABOUT WHAT IT ALL MEEEEEANS! And about how awesome it is! and what could possibly happen! and what should happen! and also all the bunnies that are multiplying like, well, bunnies in my brain! *SCREAMS*

But hey, we've got the core team back together, so who knows?

And I will totally find a way to make you watch Grimm with me SOMEHOW. ;)

I am interested in it! Have never been a practitioner (though I'm friends with some people who are), but I read and write it myself.

I love the power dynamics, I love the way it can decouple from sexuality and become an expression and exploration of whole other elements of intimacy and passion, I love mining it for what various kinks can tell us about the culture we live in. And not least I love it for the way including it in a story can allow you to develop the sexual side of a character's personality and psychology.

I also enjoy reading and writing its evil step-sibling, non-con--but in my mind they are very separate. No matter how similar the practices might look to an uninformed eye, a healthy, well-practiced BDSM relationship is entirely consensual, informed and enthusiastic...although there also exists the borderlands of inexperienced BDSM where characters can have all the goodwill in the world but occasionally transgress by accident. I've also become interested in the philosophical and practical differences between 'Safe, Sane and Consensual' vs. 'Risk Aware Consensual Kink.' The inclusion or lack thereof of 'sane' makes for some pretty amazing, cool changes in the kinds of things the characters get down to.

It's a shame it gets stereotyped and stigmatized, not to mention written poorly, because I really admire the emphasis it puts on self-exploration and explicit, unashamed communications of desires and preferences between partners.

BDSM is pretty interesting, though I've never tried it. I like the aesthetic and might give the bondage part a try someday, but I don't think I could ever get off on doing the S&M part to my partner. It's kinky to watch on TV, but different to pull off in real life..

Happy Jew Year. (:

From: [identity profile] prettyarbitrary.livejournal.com
Well, it's not like there's a list of things you have to do. It's an abbreviation like LGBT. You're not expected to be ALL of them. ^_^

Anyway, really there are so many different things that can go under it. Aside from bondage, D/s and S&M, there are things like service kink, when what really does it for you is making the other person happy. And so many variations: 'bondage' is a catch-all for things from fuzzy handcuffs to taping somebody to the wall, and S&M can be whips and leather or it can be a bit of well-placed hair-pulling, biting or fingernail raking.

Really, I think the point of it is to help people feel free to throw off their pre-conceptions and socialized expectations of sex, and to provide a framework within to explore and experiment safely. It's a shame it's got a certain 'image.' ^_^

I am once again thinking about posting a fic (I have oodles and oodles unposted since the beginning of this year) but am stuck on the "does it need a beta?" I think it's pretty good, but I also reflexively want a second opinion and gah I don't have a Teen Wolf beta... Any words of wisdom/encouragement?

Date: 2014-09-25 08:21 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] prettyarbitrary.livejournal.com
Well...what kind of beta does it need? If you want it for grammar, spelling and general coherency, the beta doesn't need to know Teen Wolf for that. :)

But truthfully if I were you and I felt good about it, I would go ahead and publish it. The majority of my stories don't have betas (if there isn't a credit, it doesn't have one ^_^). Betas can do amazing things for a story--but in my experience the most amazing things they do come at the level of plotting. Helping you, while the story is still being built and written, to tighten up plot and character and come out with a better product than you would have constructed otherwise.

But sometimes a story just doesn't need that. And this is not professional publishing. There are probably some people out there with scorecards, giving you marks, but since that doesn't translate to any form of profit for you, their opinion really is irrelevant.

If you want the confidence of knowing there are no humiliating grammatical foibles on display, go ahead and have a friend give it an eyeball. But from what I have seen of you and your writing, you are generally already solid. Since it is already written, and you think it's pretty good--I say go for it!

Beta needed... I like to think I'm pretty good at the actual mechanics of writing. I just like having an outside eye for flow and characterization, mostly, with any last little bits of errant grammar tacked on.

Thanks for the encouragement; you make some good points. I do believe I shall post it!

COMICSSSSSSSSS

Date: 2014-09-25 09:37 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] call-me-ishmael.livejournal.com
I'm throwing myself wholeheartedly into comics and loving SO MANY THINGS. I don't know why it took me so long to get into them. I read Hellblazer and Sandman decade ago and liked them both but never explored beyond that until now.

I know you've mentioned Hellblazer and the new 52 Constantine but I wasn't sure what else you've read. Got any recs? The bulk of my stuff is recent Marvel but I've been enjoying some DC and older stuff as well.

A quick list of some I've enjoyed off the top of my head: Loki: Agent of Asgard, Young Avengers, Captain Marvel, newest Ms Marvel, Batwoman, Gillen's Journey into Mystery, Hawkeye, pre-new 52 Blue Beetle, New 52 Batgirl

I don't get nearly enough chances to talk fannishly about comics.

Yay Ish! Also COMICS

Yes! Hellblazer's my all-time #1 comic. Unfortunately I haven't been paying much attention to Marvel or DC's New 52 in general in the past few years, because of all the BS the companies kept throwing down. They really wrecked house on most of my favorite titles, and I just haven't been able to summon up the enthusiasm to get back into them.

Superman is really my favorite straight-up superhero. I'm on-again-off-again with Batman, but I've kind of gotten tired of more-grimdark-than-thou thing that's always going on there. I've been nosing about with Constantine and Justice League Dark a little bit, but so far I keep comparing them to Hellblazer and finding them insubstantial by comparison.

In Marvel, Iron Man was my steadiest read for a long time, and for quite a while I followed Avengers in general. I tend not to read his titles, but I will always have a spot in my heart for Cap. I've been following Loki by word of mouth for a while. It's a lot of fun to hear about but I just haven't felt interested enough to actually chase the story down.

But the great thing about comics is that even if you haven't been following lately, you know the characters and their general backstories so well that you can always kind of slide back in. Carol is spectacular and I kind of stick my head into her books every so often to see what she's up to. And I really SHOULD pick up Hawkeye, because I love Clint and it sounds like the comic is everything that's amazing about him. And I should REALLY pick up Black Widow's title, because everything I have seen and heard of that looks flat-out amazing. She is such a wonderful character.

Right this minute I am gorging on a backlog of IDW's Transformers titles. I have loved Transformers since days of old, and they are good at digging into the potential held by the concept of a race of ancient ageless alien robots fighting a civil war across the stars.

For recs: there's an older title called Ex Machina that was fantastic, about a guy who got zapped by an alien thing and gained the power to talk to machines--and then he became mayor of New York after having a short fail-career as a superhero.

Man I need to reread Hellblazer. I've only reread the first volume recently and I can't remember it worth a damn. Gotta get to the cancer arc again, MAN that was so amazing.

Haha I hear you about the bullshit. I'd heard grumbling about the New 52 and since I wasn't really into comics I didn't understand what all the fuss was about. Then I read the new 52 Blue Beetle after I'd read the old series. Ohhhhh man, I'm angry just thinking about it. As much as I enjoy comics they're incredibly frustrating and not newcomer friendly.

I've been making my way through Fraction's Invincible Iron Man. I didn't think I'd enjoy Iron Man comics but I really like what Fraction did, especially all the little things. (Why isn't there a Triumph Division comic damn it?) I think I find the people around Tony more interesting than Tony himself. I read some of Brubaker's Cap run and liked it, but in the end I'll always love the movie version best. (STEVE, SAM, NAT. YES.) I've not read much Avengers as a team--some Avengers Assemble because KSD wrote it. There are so many versions I have trouble figuring out what's going on.

Loki was a character I never thought I'd like. I had little interest in the movie version and I'm still boggled by how much the latest comic incarnation has captured my attention. And CAROL oh man I love KSD's writing. Captain Marvel and Hawkeye were what got me really giving comics a try. I read the first volume of Black Widow--gorgeous art! Not sure if I'm completely sold on the execution but I'll definitely be reading more.

While a lot of my friends are/were into Transformers somehow I missed that boat and know very little about them aside from the one time I saw the old 80's movie.

Is it the Ex Machina by Brian K Vaughn? I've had mixed feelings about the other stuff of his I've tried but I keep getting recced other titles I haven't tried yet. Perhaps one of them will work for me.

OMG, I have totally fallen down the Marvel comics hole lately, starting with Fraction's Hawkeye and then dipping into Winter Soldier and Black Widow runs. My problem is that I'm having a huge problem figuring out time lines and reading order and it's making me hang back more than I'd like to.

I love the MCU, but I want MORE, and it's fine if it doesn't all jive exactly (I have this pet theory that all comics are really just property-owner sanctioned fanfic) but sometimes it's maddening trying to figure out what's canon, what's retconned and what's only canon in certain books/runs, etc.

Waaaay back years ago I was really into Poison Elves (so sad when I checked up on it a few years ago and found Drew Hayes had passed), Gloomcookie and Strangers in Paradise so this whole multi-author superhero canon is kind of a new animal to me. I was really happy to find Rat Queens recently, which I feel like dips toes into the best of both worlds! :D

If you want something in a similar vein, I think Parks & Recreation would probably be awesome.

Also, there is something terribly sad about a Firefly icon on a 'my show is ended' post.

I multi-ship like mad, so I don't get too frustrated about my overlooked ships, but I will take the opportunity to shout out and see if anyone here wants to discuss John/Lestrade from Sherlock or Phryne/Mac from Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries.

JOHN/LESTRADE YOU SAY.

Yes. Yes, I can do this. I AM CALLED.

I love how they can be so snarky and exasperated together. And how they're both kind of badass but also supportive and caring by nature. Also: HOMG they're just so hot.

I went for a decade+ without having any serious or lasting celeb crushes, and now all of a sudden I am assailed on all side by feelings about pretty people and I'm like, "Hey, it's getting awfully crowded here in my fantasies," and my brain is just like, "Oh hey, so have you seen this person?" Tumblr is like a minefield of potential physical attraction at this point. Meta analysis and fiction have taken a distant back seat to eye-candy and I mean, it's nice but I'd really like my brain back. O.o

Ahahaha, Tumblr is bad for that. Or good? Successful, anyway.

It is, after all, what Tumblr is basically FOR. And it really has a way of hitting you with the media-guns blazing. And the fandom-guns. They can be just as dangerous!

You know what I find really interesting? Start paying attention to the technical stuff in all that pretty eye-candy, and you can begin seeing how it's not actually how about the person looks (well, I mean, sometimes), but about how they're packaged and presented. It's not about them being innately desirable so much as being held up by someone else who's saying, "This person is desirable!"

Sometimes it's deliberate professional media work. But sometimes it's fans who've developed an eye for the best presentation of their favorite people. They'll grab a picture, sometimes crop or edit it just so, and then re-release it back out into the world with maybe some commentary to highlight, and it does, on an intuitive level, pretty much the same work as a professional PR job.

And then your brain buys in, because somebody's more or less sat you down and given you 'this person is desirable!' googles in the form of framing and lighting. :D

You can really mind-fuck yourself doing this, but it's also a pretty great lesson in learning how everybody has the potential to be seen as beautiful and desirable. It's just about presentation.

Shit. I've been up since 4am treating two patients. One died. One is doing pretty much okay so sent it home. S has gone away for the weeken and right now telling myself 'everything dies, we just help them died slower'is not working.

Ahhhhhhhhh damn. I'm so sorry. I know that you did everything humanly possible. It's hard to accept that we can't always help or take away the pain. You can't save every patient, but the fact that you try is worth a lot.

Don't feel bad about feeling bad. You deserve time to grieve. You poured your heart into those little guys and you let your patient take a bit of you with them. You couldn't stop it from happening, but you made sure they weren't alone. I've been there, too, and I know that matters a great deal to them, sometimes as much as anything else you could do.
